Durban-based Aspen Pharmacare has received regulatory approval from Health Canada for Aspen-Semaglutide — a generic equivalent of Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic — following the expiration of the original semaglutide patent in January 2026. The approval was granted to a Canadian subsidiary of the company, making Aspen one of the first generic manufacturers to receive such clearance in North America.
Manufacturing and launch
Aspen group chief executive Stephen Saad confirmed that the company’s South African base will manufacture the multi-dose pen format, while a facility in France will produce single-dose autoinjectors. The split manufacturing arrangement is designed to meet anticipated market demand across different delivery preferences.
However, a commercial launch in Canada is not imminent. Supply chain disruptions involving the active pharmaceutical ingredient — sourced from India’s Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories — could delay distribution until at least late October 2026. The timeline remains uncertain at time of publication.
Why this matters for South Africa
The approval is primarily a Canadian regulatory milestone, but it is significant for South Africa for two reasons. First, it confirms that Aspen’s South African manufacturing operations are the designated production site for the generic semaglutide pen — a meaningful endorsement of local pharmaceutical capacity. Second, it signals that Aspen is actively positioning itself in the GLP-1 generic market at a global level, which may eventually translate into a local market offering.
South Africa’s GLP-1 market is already in flux: SAHPRA approved Sun Pharma’s generic semaglutide in July 2026, and Novo Nordisk launched its own lower-cost Extensior product through Acino. An Aspen entry into the local semaglutide market — should it occur — would add a third competing product from a company with deep South African roots and established local distribution.
